FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EPA seal(Lenexa, Kan., Oct. 5, 2016) - Dutchtown South Community Corporation (DSCC) in St. Louis, Mo., is one of 10 local community-based organizations across the country awarded $120,000 for projects seeking to address local environmental and public health concerns in their communities through collaboration with other stakeholders.

Each organization will receive $120,000 over two years under the EPA Office of Environmental Justice’s Collaborative Problem-Solving Cooperative Agreement Program (CPS). The CPS Program requires selected applicants, or recipients, to use EPA’s Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving Model as part of their projects. The model aims to address local environmental and/or public health issues in a collaborative manner with various stakeholders such as communities, industry, academic institutions, and others. DSCC will apply the CPS Model to reduce improper solid waste disposal, littering and illegal dumping, while building community capacity. The CPS Program assists recipients in building collaborative partnerships to help them understand and address environmental and public health concerns in their communities.

The goals of DSCC’s “So Fresh, So Clean, So Creative Southside St. Louis” project are to increase public awareness of solutions to solid waste issues and build community capacity to address and enact system-level changes in regard to the amount of litter, improper waste disposal, and illegal dumping within four southeast neighborhoods in the city of St. Louis (including Dutchtown, Gravois Park, Marine Villa, and Mount Pleasant).

Key project activities include: a localized neighborhood-level sanitation systems review; multiple neighborhood cleanup demonstrations and development of recycling educational programs for residents; workshops for landlords and tenants about sustainable materials management for rental housing; and consultations for developing a self-sustaining waste diversion program to leverage resources and create green jobs in historically underprivileged areas of St. Louis.

Environmental Justice (EJ) is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income in the development, implementation and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations and policies.
