EPA Announces 2016 Climate Leadership Awards, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport Among 17 Awardees Recognized for Climate Action
DALLAS - (March. 9, 2016) Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport at the Climate Leadership Awards. The airport, among 17 winners nationwide, was honored for setting a target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2 percent a year from 2010 to 2020.
The Climate Leadership Awards recognize business and organization for managing and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in internal operations and throughout the supply chain, as well as integrating climate resilience into their operating strategies. This is the fifth year of the annual Climate Leadership Awards, a partnership between the EPA's Center for Corporate Climate Leadership, the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2Es) and The Climate Registry (TCR).
"As one of the busiest airports in the country, DFW International's commitment to the environment can bring a significant reduction in greenhouse gases," said EPA Regional Administrator Ron Curry. "They have shown that businesses can build environmental stewardship into their plans for growth."
"Our Climate Leadership Award winners are going above and beyond through their outstanding actions and dedication to reduce harmful carbon pollution that leads to climate change," said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. "Our award winners are leading the way towards a healthy environment, and demonstrate that meeting challenges of a changing climate can be done."

DFW is being recognized for Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management-Goal Setting-for the following accomplishments:
DFW set an absolute target of an annual 2 percent GHG reduction in direct and indirect GHG emissions from 2010 to 2020. Under the global Airport Carbon Accreditation certification program, DFW also has an accompanying future intensity goal of 20 percent GHG reduction over the same period in direct and indirect emissions that the company normalized based on total DFW passengers.
DFW plans to achieve its absolute reduction goals by increasing its proportion of 30 percent renewable electricity to 40 percent; alternative fuel fleet vehicles; integrating best available energy efficient technology into facilities, systems, processes and operations; and engaging and partnering with regulatory agencies, academia, nongovernmental organizations, business associations, and other stakeholders to develop effective and sustainable solutions to air quality challenges.
From an innovative partnership that dramatically increased mass adoption of home energy and water efficiency projects in communities across California to some of the country's largest corporations exceeding their aggressive emission reduction goals, the EPA's Climate Leadership Award winners illustrate that actions to combat climate change make smart business decisions.
The awards were presented at the 2016 Climate Leadership Conference in Seattle, Washington.
EPA's Center for Corporate Climate Leadership establishes standards of climate leadership by encouraging organizations with emerging climate objectives to identify and achieve cost-effective greenhouse gas emission reductions, while helping more advanced organizations drive innovations in reducing their greenhouse gas impacts in their supply chains and beyond. The Center provides technical tools, guidance, educational resources, and opportunities for information sharing and peer exchange among organizations interested in reducing the environmental impacts associated with climate change.
