Muskegon Lake Watershed Partnership is a public advisory council for the AOC. Over the winter of 2003-2004, the MLWP developed a project to involve stakeholders in the development of numerical restoration targets for fish and wildlife, water quality and related natural resource issues.

EPA

• Contaminated sediment removed from Division Street Outfall.The Division Street Outfall Legacy Act project was completed in 2012. 43,000 cubic yards of sediment were removed and a 60-acre cap was placed over the area to contain any remaining contamination. Nearshore habitat restoration was also completed at the site.
• The Ruddiman Creek Legacy Act Cleanup was completed in the Muskegon Lake AOC in 2006. 90,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment were removed. The main contaminants removed included lead, cadmium, chromium and PCBs. Flow patterns were restored and the creek and pond were reconstructed once the dredging was finished.

MDEQ has taken over the RAP responsibilities.  

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources was the initial agency responsible for remedial action plan development and published the first RAP document in 1987.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredged the navigational channel of Muskegon Lake in 2011 and used the spoils for beach nourishment. The spoils have been used for nourishment since the 1980s, which meets the restoration criteria for the AOC. The area was sampled and, based on the results, the restrictions on dredging BUI was removed in 2011.
