ORD/NERL/Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) Library Services

This U.S. Environmental Protection Agency research facility is part of the Office of Research and Development (ORD) --- a division of the National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) in Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina.

The overarching mission of the U.S. EPA is to protect human health and the environment. ESD, which stands for the Environmental Sciences Division, conducts research, development, and technology transfer programs to increase the understanding of environmental exposures to human and ecological receptors.

The ESD-Las Vegas Library provides reference services and research support for more than fifty full-time EPA scientists, post-doctorate researchers, and their contractors and staff. The library plays an important role in the research process by maintaining both print and electronic media collections; perfoming customs database searches; and supporting an active interlibrary loan program. Limited support is also provided to the public on an as-requested basis and via phone support.

History of the Library

The ESD library service has been in existence since 1966 when it was a part of the U.S. Public Health Service's Southwest Radiological Health Laboratory.  Originally, the collection focused on nuclear science and radiation technology.  Most of the early reports from this era are still housed in the ESD library as well as special one-of-a-kind collections such as the National Eutrophication Study. In recent years the collection has been broadened to include environmental science and other specific areas of research currently performed at the Las Vegas facility.
