EPA Efforts in the Asia-Pacific Region
EPA’s engagement in the Asia-Pacific region helps safeguard our domestic environment; protect the health of our citizens; address global environmental issues; and improve the safety of products and food.
Our work in Asia focuses on the largest developing economies and population centers, including China and Indonesia. We also collaborate on initiatives in Australia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Our efforts in the region support EPA’s international priorities and benefit the environment and public health in the Unites States, as well as that of our partners.

Highlights
China: Combating air pollution and growing clean energy economies are major themes of the EPA’s collaboration with China. In November 2015, EPA and the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People’s Republic of China held the fifth meeting of the Joint Committee on Environmental Cooperation (JCEC) in Washington, DC. At the meeting, the Administrator and Minister set forth top priorities for environmental cooperation and approved workplans for the next two years based on environmental objectives. Australia: On February 29, 2016, EPA and the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources signed a five-year MOU to renew cooperation on water. This engagement will advance high level policy dialog, exchanges of lessons learned, and technical staff discussions on key emerging topics.
Where We Work
EPA does not currently have active bilateral programs in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, East Timor, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, or Sri Lanka.
We occasionally engage these countries through multilateral initiatives (e.g., Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, Association of Southeast Asian Nations); through regional and global initiatives (e.g., Global Methane Initiative); or on select technical issues.
