Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) visited the St. Marys Metal Finishing Inc. facility and met with company representatives on October 21, 2008. On September 29, 2014, EPA determined that the Human Health Exposures Environmental Indicator has been met.

The facility is a metals finishing company located at 1057 Trout Run Road in St. Marys, Benzinger Township, Elk County, Pennsylvania. The facility is located on a 1.37 acre parcel. The facility has been in operation at its present location since 1971. St. Marys Metal Finishing (SMMF) is an active metal treatment facility that applies functional plating on small parts for industrial and automotive applications. SMMF conducts three kinds of plating operations: plastic impregnation to prepare parts made from powdered metal for further plating; electronic zinc plating to rust proof and improve the part’s appearance; and electroless zinc phosphate plating to give the parts a grainy coating, so it can hold oil or paint. Hazardous wastes generated at the facility include cadmium waste (D006), chromium waste (D007), spent halogenated solvent (F002), sludge from electroplating operations (F006), spent cyanide plating bath solution (F007), and cyanide plating bath residue (F008).
