Cleanup Status
On August 2003, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Final Determination that no further corrective action is required at this time at the Calgon Carbon Corporation, Neville Island facility.
A site visit was conducted at Calgon Carbon Inc, in Neville Island , Pennsylvania on May 31, 2001. The purpose of the visit was to gather relevant information to assess current and past environmental impact of Calgon Carbon operations. After an extensive review of existing information and the site visit, EPA determined that there is no unacceptable human exposure to contamination nor is there any evidence of groundwater contamination caused by the Facility.
EPA published in a notice in local newspaper detailing the proposed Agency decision of no further corrective action. The thirty (30) day public comment period ended on August 18, 2003 and no comments were received during that time.

The Neville Island Plant of Calgon Carbon Corporation is located on the southeast corner of Neville Island, directly to the east of the Fleming Park Bridge The Neville Island Plant contains three separate production operations: Carbon Reactivation (the Reactivation Facility); Carbon Impregnation and Drying (the Impregnation and Drying Facility); and, Manufacture of Activated Carbon in Pellet Form (the Pellet Carbon Facility). In 1940, the site was occupied by Pittsburgh Coke and Chemical Corporation, manufacturing activated carbon. In the early 1960s, Pittsburgh Activated Carbon Company was formed. In the mid-1960s, Calgon Corporation bought the Pittsburgh Activated Carbon facility.
