Cleanup Status

PADEP visited the American National Can facility and met with company representatives on January 21, 2009.  EPA is reviewing existing environmental information to determine if further investigation is required.  EPA will focus first on the health and groundwater impacts, if any, presented by the facility.  Once EPA completes this review process, an environmental indicator determination will be prepared and posted to this website.

Site Description

The facility is located at 221 South 10th Street, Lemoyne, Pennsylvania 17043.  The facility consisted of a large building on approximately 38 acres of land bordered on the east and northeast by South 10th Street.  The north and northwest was bound by a railroad line.  The west and south sides are bound by South 18th Street and S.R. 581 (Harrisburg Expressway).  The facility decorated and coated metal sheets for metal containers.  Operations at the facility began in 1954 and ceased in 1993.  The manufacturing processes consisted of cutting and forming cylinders with sheet metals, sealing the ends with lead-and tin-based solder, and spraying the cans with butoxyethanol as a disinfectant.  Wastes generated at the facility included wastewater containing lead, and solvents such as methyl isobutyl ketone, xylene, toluene, acetone, methylene chloride, tetrachloroethylene, and trichloroethylene.  The facility conducted investigation and removal actions under Act Two.  Attainment of Statewide Health Standards for soil and Site –Specific Standards for groundwater was demonstrated and approved by PADEP in 1990 and 2001, respectively.
