A corrective action post closure permit was issued to the facility in June 1999 which required facility monitoring and a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) workplan.
Cleanup Status
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) determined the Human Health Environmental Indicator (EI) was met as of September 2008 and the Groundwater EI was met as of November 2012.
DEQ is working with the owner’s consultant to evaluate impacted areas and develop a remedy for the facility. The consultant completed the demolition of the main site buildings and is currently working to improve access to the southern portion of the site in anticipation of future soil and groundwater remediation efforts. DEQ recently met with the consultant to discuss performing interim measures to remediate select areas. A corrective measure study (CMS) report has been submitted and is currently under review by DEQ. The planned time frame for a remedy decision will be determined following review of the CMS and discussions with the facility and consultant.

The Wilson Jones facility (formerly Acme Visible Records (AVR)) began operating in 1954. AVR/Wilson Jones manufactured office/records storage and retrieval equipment until 1992. There are currently no manufacturing processes at the site.
The Wilson Jones site is traversed by railroad tracks owned by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company. The main manufacturing building, which has undergone several expansions since being erected in 1950, is located on the northern portion of the site. The former wastewater lagoon is located on the southern portion of the site. While in operation, industrial wastewaters, both process and non-process, were routed to the 1.6-acre wastewater lagoon.
Contaminants at this Facility
The primary contaminants of concern in the soil, subsoils, and groundwater include arsenic, barium, benzene, bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, lead, naphthalene, tetrachloroethene, trichloroethene, and vinyl chloride.
Institutional and Engineering Controls at this Facility
The need for Institutional Controls has yet to be determined.
Land Reuse Information at this Facility
There are currently no manufacturing operations and the site is vacant.
Site Responsibility at this Facility
RCRA Corrective Action activities at this facility are being conducted under the direction of the Virginia DEQ with assistance from the EPA Region 3.
