GPP Releases Updated Top Partner Rankings and On-Site Renewables Challenge

In case you missed it, on July 25, GPP released updates to its Top Partner Rankings, which highlight organizations that are choosing to use electricity from clean, renewable sources.

  • National Top 100 Partners: Seven new Partners appear on the list – Goldman Sachs, U.S. General Services Administration, IKEA, Philips Electronics, Biogen, Cinemark USA, and Philips Lighting – ranking 19th, 30th, 37th, 60th, 69th, 81st, and 83rd, respectively. Intel, the District of Columbia, Lockheed Martin, BNY Mellon, Best Buy, Colgate-Palmolive, the State of Delaware, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture shook up the list even more with large increases in their green power use.
  • Top 30 On-Site Partners: Four new Partners made the list: California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation at number four; General Motors / GMVM Orion at number eight; IKEA at number 11; and the U.S. General Services Administration at number 14.

EPA will update the Top Lists on October 24, the data deadline for which is October 4. Check out all of the Partnership's top green power users.

GPP also released updates to the On-Site Renewables Challenge. Eleven new Partners joined the Challenge and in total, the 321 participants used nearly 1.4 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of on-site green power. EPA created the Challenge in support of President Obama's Climate Action Plan (PDF) (21 pp, 311K), with a goal of doubling on-site green power use by Green Power Partners by 2020. Stay tuned for the next update, also on October 24.

GPP by the Numbers

Technology and telecommunications companies procure a good portion of the green power in the Green Power Partnership. As of July 2016, GPP has 62 tech and telecom Partners that collectively use more than 10.6 billion kWh of green power. While tech and telecom companies comprise less than 5 percent of all Green Power Partners, they use 30 percent of the green power that accounts for the Partnership's total numbers, which is enough electricity to power a whopping 972,000 average American homes for a year.

Bloomberg Article, "Waging America's Wars Using Renewable Energy"

GPP Partner Bloomberg recently published an article regarding the long-term commitments that the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has made purchasing clean and renewable power. DoD is the second-largest buyer of renewable electricity through long-term power-purchase agreements (PPA) in the country, only surpassed by Google. This revelation offers one of the clearest examples of the same clean energy imperatives driving companies, cities, universities, and other federal agencies.

At the Pentagon, the military has committed to acquiring up to 3 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity before 2025. The Air Force and the Navy lead the armed services in commissioning clean energy projects. Retired Navy Vice Admiral Dennis McGinn, now an assistant secretary for energy, installations, and environment, said economic security is "inextricably" linked with energy and the environment. "You can't consider one without considering effects on the other."

This interactive program will enable attendees to learn from leading practitioners with experience guiding on-site and offsite renewable energy projects from start to finish. The program will be comprised of training activities, interactive exercises, hands-on learning opportunities for successfully navigating the intricacies of renewable energy projects, and case studies from different industries illustrating strategies for addressing challenges and opportunities related to establishing a comprehensive renewables strategy.

The workshop will help public and private sector electricity consumers advance renewable energy strategies by overcoming common barriers and taking advantage of key opportunities and more advanced approaches. Individuals who are just launching their renewable energy initiatives will benefit from pre-workshop training activities, while those who have already engaged in significant renewables work will benefit from a range of topics designed to help them bolster their capabilities through exposure to topics and solutions they have not yet addressed. Even the most seasoned practitioners will benefit from ample networking opportunities and hearing insights from their peers. All participants will leave with a clear understanding of the renewable energy marketplace, and a plan for engaging the right stakeholders to integrate cutting edge initiatives into the energy strategies of their organizations.
