Greening EPA

Scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Results

Under Executive Order (EO) 13514, EPA’s goal was to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 25 percent by fiscal year (FY) 2020 compared to an FY 2008 baseline. In FY 2014, EPA exceeded this goal by reducing its Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 59.5 percent compared to FY 2008.

EPA’s Progress toward Scope 1 and 2 GHG Emissions Reduction Goals

EPA has reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions primarily by improving the energy efficiency of its facilities and continuing to purchase and generate renewable energy. EPA has also reduced total fleet fuel consumption and increased its percentage of alternative fuel use compared to petroleum.

Under EO 13693, EPA has developed a new Scope 1 and 2 emission reduction goal of 46 percent by FY 2025, relative to its FY 2008 baseline.
