Grants Mining District

Grants Mining District Uranium Biomonitoring Project Summary

The Department of Health’s Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau (EHEB) recruited volunteers in the Grants Mining District during May and June of 2010 as part of public health surveillance for uranium exposure. The Grants Mining District was selected for uranium testing due to its known natural deposits of uranium, as well as its history of uranium contamination due to mining and milling activities. Specifically, the communities of Grants, San Mateo, San Rafael, Bluewater, Milan, and Laguna Pueblo participated. This document is a description of why the EHEB conducted this testing, how this testing was conducted, what was found, what the results mean, and what the recommendations are.
