RADInfo allows users to search the system by location or regulation to identify facilities governed by certain EPA radiation protection regulations. The database can also be used to find out more information about these regulations or about specific individual radionuclides.

This is a brief user's guide to the RADInfo Search. Select a variety of different search options and output options detailed below.

Select more than one search option at a time to speed up the search and make the retrieval more focused. Only information about those facilities matching all of the specified criteria will be retrieved.

Facility Selection Option

Facility Name

Enter the complete or partial facility name to retrieve information about all facilities with that name. Select the "Containing" option when entering a partial name for a better retrieval the first time you access the data. When an "Exact Match" option is specified, do not specify other search options; only one facility will be retrieved.

Facility Identification Option Value

Enter the complete or partial facility ID to retrieve all facilities with that ID. Select the "Containing" option when entering a partial ID for a better retrieval the first time you access the data. When an "Exact Match" option is specified for a facility ID, do not specify other search options; only one facility will be retrieved.

Geography Search Option

Select from the following geographical search options: ZIP Code, Address, City, County, and State.

ZIP Code

The entry can be one or more digits. It allows you to enter the zip plus-4 extension as well.

Address

Enter a complete or partial street address.

City

Enter a complete or partial city name. Entering the two-character state postal abbreviation will help to narrow the search.

County

Enter a complete or partial county name and a two-character state postal abbreviation. Entering the two-character state postal abbreviation will help to narrow the search

State

Select a two-character state postal abbreviation. A list of the postal abbreviations and the state names is provided below:

Postal Abbreviations and State Names
AK = Alaska AL = Alabama AR = Arkansas
AS = American Samoa AZ = Arizona CA = California
CN = Canada CO = Colorado CT = Connecticut
DC = District of Columbia DE = Delaware FL = Florida
FM = Federated States of Micronesia GA = Georgia GU = Guam
HI = Hawaii IA = Iowa ID = Idaho
IL = Illinois IN = Indiana KS = Kansas

TX = Texas UT = Utah VA = Virginia
VI = Virgin Islands VT = Vermont WA = Washington
WI = Wisconsin WV = West Virginia WY = Wyoming

Note: We strongly recommend that you enter a small geographical area to begin the search since Envirofacts contains a large number of facilities.

Radiation Regulation Search Option

You can also identify facilities governed by a particular regulation. Select a desired regulation from the drop-down list to identify facilities governed by certain EPA regulations regarding the use, storage, and emission of, or contamination by, radioactive materials currently included within RADInfo. The applicable regulations are listed below:

Regulation Types of Facilities
40 CFR Part 61 All RAD NESHAPS (National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants) Facilities
40 CFR Part 61, Subpart B Underground Uranium Mines
40 CFR Part 61, Subpart H Department Energy Facilities
40 CFR Part 61, Subpart I Certain Non-DOE (US Department of Energy) Facilities
40 CFR Part 61, Subpart K Elemental Phosphorous Plants
40 CFR Part 61, Subpart Q DOE Facilities Radon Emissions
40 CFR Part 61, Subpart R Radon from Phosphogypsum Stacks
40 CFR Part 61, Subpart T Non-Operational Uranium Mill Tailings Piles
40 CFR Part 61, Subpart W Operating Uranium Mill Tailings Piles
40 CFR 191 WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant)
40 CFR 194 WIPP and its Waste Generators
40 CFR 300 RAD NPL Sites
All Regulations All Facilities Regulated by Selected EPA Regulations for Radiation within RADInfo

Type of Data Returned Option

Select the type of data you wish returned from your search depending on the particular question you wish to answer.

Location Data

Select "Location Data" to obtain the name and address of any facility which meets your search criteria. For example, you might search on a selected regulation and obtain a list of facilities governed by the selected regulation and their general facility location information.

Specifically, your search will generate the following facility information in tabular form when the output is set for location data:

Regulatory Data

Select "Regulatory Data" to obtain the name and applicable regulations for radiation governing any facility which meets your search criteria. For example, you can search on selected geographical data and obtain a matrix of facilities mapped to the regulations under which they are governed.

Specifically, your search will generate the following data elements in tabular form when the output is set for regulatory data:

  • RADInfo Facility ID: Click on the RADInfo Facility ID for that facility in which you are interested to obtain additional environmental information contained within RADInfo.
  • Facility Name: Click on the Facility Name to view EPA Facility Identification Search results for that facility.
  • Applicable Regulations: Possible regulations that would apply are: 40CFR61, 40CFR191, 40CFR194, and/or 40CFR300. The appropriate regulations are marked A "Yes" for each facility listed. You can also click on the column heading for a particular regulation to view a summary of that regulation.

Note: When "Regulatory Data" is selected as the "Type of Data Returned," the user should not identify a specific regulation as a "Radiation Regulation Search" parameter; if the user selects both a regulation as a "Radiation Regulation Search" parameter and identifies "Regulatory Data" as the "Type of Data Returned" the regulation specified as part of the "Radiation Regulation Search" criteria will be ignored. The data returned will identify any and all regulations for radiation depicted within RADInfo for the facilities which meet the remaining search criteria.

Usage Constraints

Information in the RADInfo database can be freely accessed through the use of this search. The complexity of the search is up to the user. Searches that return a large volume of data may terminate prematurely due to system limitations. Develop searches that return small batches of data and terminate the session as soon as the searches have been executed, so that others can access the database.
