Citizen Science Grants and Other Funding Opportunities

Citizen science projects may be able to obtain funding through the following federal options:

  • EPA Grants: Learn about current funding opportunities available through EPA
  • EPA Research Grants: Explore research funding opportunities through EPA
  • Grants.gov: Find out about available grants from multiple federal agencies nationwide
  • USDA US Forest Service: Supports projects focusing on management of the nation’s water resources; engaging youth in conservation stewardship; promoting healthy, active lifestyles; and serving communities

  • Knight Foundation: Funds projects that foster innovation, communities and the arts to create informed and engaged communities
  • Toyota: Supports international, national and local programs focusing in environment, education and safety
  • National Science Foundation: Provides funding in many areas, including environmental research and education
  • National Fish and Wildlife Foundation: Will fund projects aiming to sustain, restore, and enhance the nation’s fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats
  • The Conservation Fund: National funding opportunities to enhance rural communities
  • Earthwatch Institute: Provides citizen scientist and financial support to research projects addressing urgent global needs all over the world
  • The Bush Foundation: Community Innovation Grants support communities to use problem-solving processes that lead to more effective, equitable and sustainable solutions
  • Alfred P. Sloan Foundation: Interested in projects that it expects will result in a strong benefit to society, and for which funding from the private sector, the government, or other foundations is not widely available.
