Profiles of Members of the Native-American Community at EPA

JoAnn Kay Chase

JoAnn Kay Chase, Director
American Indian Environmental Office
Washington, DC

What is your tribal affiliation(s)?

I am a citizen of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation

What brought you to EPA?

I’ve always believed in EPA’s mission. As native peoples, our culture is inseparable from the environment. An influential factor for me was EPA’s distinct history of a strong partnership with tribal governments. The opportunity to provide national leadership, advice and assistance on Indian affairs throughout the agency and across the federal family was extremely compelling to me. I am so grateful to be here!

Describe the type of work you do at EPA.

I work in management, directing issues related to our American Indian Environmental Office.

Did you go to vocational school or college? What was your major?

I have a bachelor of arts from Boston University and a law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law

What message would you like to send other American Indians/Alaska Natives who are considering college or a career at EPA?

My college experience was one of hope and opportunity that provided me with a toolbox of knowledge and skills to serve Native peoples. I would encourage anyone considering college to go for it! Though I attended more conventional institutions, I am a huge fan of tribal colleges and universities. I’d absolutely encourage Native Americans to consider a career at EPA, where we have a meaningful role in ensuring that our unique cultures continue to thrive for generations to come.
