Profiles of Members of EPA's LGBT Community

Bob Sachs
Bob Sachs, Environmental Scientist
Office of Policy
Washington DC

Where were you born?

Hanover, NH.

What brought you to EPA?

Respect for the environment brought me to EPA. I’ve been here for over 23 years.

Describe the type of work you do at EPA.

During my career at EPA, I’ve been actively involved in regulatory issues, from drafting regulations for hazardous waste to developing an environmental code of conduct for ski areas in the U.S. I also worked on a presidential initiative on environmental technology known as Performance Track, where top-performing facilities that adopted green practices were recognized.

Most recently, I have been working with the Executive Management Council, which is chaired by EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe and is comprised of the senior career leaders at EPA: our deputy regional administrators and deputy assistant administrators. The EMC addresses management strategy, policy, guidance, and implementation issues from across the regions and programs that require agency‐wide attention and solutions. I was one of the primary drafters of the EMC’s charter and I have worked closely with the group for the last 4 years.

What is your highest level of education? What was your major?

I have a bachelor of science in geology.

What inspired you to fight for equal rights for the members of the LBGT community?

The day my son came out inspired me to fight for my son and many other members in the LBGT community.

What message would you like to send other members of the LBGT community who are considering college or a career in environmental protection?

Do what you love, learn all you can, and don’t give up.
