Denise Benjamin-Sirmons

Denise Benjamin-Sirmons, Director
Office of Diversity, Advisory Committee Management and Outreach
Office of Administration and Resources Management
Washington, DC

Where were you born?

Rose Hall, Guyana.

What brought you to EPA?

I was looking for an opportunity for career advancement at a federal agency with an important mission.

What type of work do you do at EPA?

As a senior executive, I provide the vision for the office responsible for EPA's diversity efforts and the program that oversees our advisory committees. Like other senior executives throughout the federal government, I provide leadership regarding budgetary constraints, workforce development, and building coalitions to achieve our mission.

What is your highest level of education? What was your major?

I have a master of laws degree.

What message would you like to send other Black/African Americans who are considering college or a career in environmental protection?

Careers in environmental protection represent one of the fastest-growing job markets domestically and internationally. These offer a wide variety of opportunities, ranging from environmental law, business, advocacy and education, to highly technical and scientific jobs in such disciplines as the sciences and engineering. These opportunities bode particularly well for those committed to achieving sustainable communities and to protecting the health and well being of our most vulnerable populations. I recommend pursuing a career in this arena, especially for those desiring a dynamic and successful career, with a purpose!
