Experienced Environmental Attorney

The United States Environmental Protection Agency is seeking applications for an experienced attorney in its Region 7 office located in Lenexa, Kansas. Specific experience with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and Section 112(r) of the Clean Air Act (CAA) preferred.

The attorney will work together with the Agency’s environmental programs, the United States Department of Justice, as well as state, tribal and local agencies and their counsel, to enforce, defend, and implement federal environmental laws and regulations in accordance with Agency policies and priorities. The successful applicant will be one who takes a problem-solving and results-oriented approach to the delivery of legal advice, with clear evaluation of risks and benefits associated with the implementation of those federal laws and regulations.

Matters handled require the development and application of emerging law and policy, as well as the use of sophisticated negotiation and litigation strategies. This is a unique opportunity to practice law in a major governmental agency with a dynamic and diverse workforce.

Qualified applicants must be graduates of an accredited law school, be current members of a state bar, have demonstrable experience with the environmental statutes enumerated above (two to five years as a practicing attorney), have excellent written and oral communication skills, and possess a strong interest in public service. Salary will be in the GS-11 to 14 series, commensurate with experience. The position includes excellent benefits and a family-friendly work environment.
