794 Green Street - East Palo Alto, California - Targeted Brownfields Assessment Fact Sheet (PDF)(1 pg, 215 K,

This one acre property in East Palo Alto was historically agricultural and residential. An EPA-funded technical assistance assessed the property for pesticides and lead from agricultural use lead-based paint. The property owner considered locating a preschool on the property.

Memorial Airpark - Gila River Indian Community, Chandler, Arizona - Targeted Brownfields Assessment Fact Sheet (PDF)(1 pg, 489 K,

The property was previously leased by various businesses for maintenance and storage of aircraft and associated parts. An EPA-funded environmental assessment was conducted to assess the property for contaminants of concern that included metals, pesticides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and gamma radiation.

Monterey Road - Gilroy, California - Targeted Brownfields Assessment Fact Sheet (PDF)(1 pg, 328 K,

The property occupies 2.3 acres in a densely mixed urban, commercial and residential area zoned as “Civic/Cultural Arts District.” The city is currently using the property as an arts center and community demonstration garden. Historical land use of the property has been residential and commercial. For this technical assistance, only a public record review and an exterior visual property inspection were conducted.

The property is approximately 0.7 acre and is mostly undeveloped with an existing 0.1 acre community garden. Historical land use has been residential and commercial since 1898. A warehouse building constructed on the property in the mid to late 20th century was demolished in 2014. An EPA funded environmental assessment was conducted to assess the property for contaminants of concern that included metals, lead, petroleum, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Former Beeline Dragway - Salt River Pima – Maricopa Indian Community, Arizona - Targeted Brownfields Assessment Fact Sheet (PDF)(1 pg, 285 K,

The site was native desert land prior to the late 1950s and early 1960s, when it was developed as a gravel pit and dragway for recreational and competitive drag racing. The dragway property is approximately one mile long and currently consists of native desert land and two large asphalt pads.A n EPA-funded environmental assessment was conducted to assess the property for contaminants of concern that included asbestos, metals, volatile organic carbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

EPA provided technical assistance to research historic property uses and identify potential contaminants of concern at the property. Long-term proposed reuse includes an office space, workshop and community garden and are focused on supporting residents of East Palo Alto.

Blackwater Trading Post - Gila River Indian Community, Arizona - Targeted Brownfields Assessment Fact Sheet (PDF)(1 pg, 510 K,

EPA Brownfields technical assistance was provided to address potential contamination at the site and ultimately facilitate redevelopment of the site to benefit the economic base of the Gila River Indian Community. The property will be redeveloped for commercial use providing employment opportunities to the Gila River Indian Community.

1402-1406 Dogwood Road - El Centro, California - Targeted Brownfields Assessment Fact Sheet (PDF)(1 pg, 146 K,
January 2015)
An environmental site assessment funded by the EPA determined asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint were present in on-site structures. Soil sampled at the site was not found to be significantly impacted by contaminants of concern. Recommendation: Abate asbestos prior to the proposed demolition and disposal of existing buildings.

826 4th Street - Eureka, California - Targeted Brownfields Assessment Fact Sheet (PDF)(1 pg, 218 K,

The County of Humboldt in Northern California received assistance from EPA with assessing a property in downtown Eureka presently used as a parking lot, but located adjacent to a former dry cleaner and gas station. The assessment will help facilitate the county’s plan to clean up soil contamination and redevelop the property as government offices and a new community corrections reentry resource center.

Leslie Street - Ukiah, California - Targeted Brownfields Assessment Fact Sheet (PDF)(1 pg, 530 K,
November 2015)
EPA assisted the City of Ukiah, Calif., with assessing potential contamination at three properties in a formerly industrial area that were used for bulk fuel storage. Ukiah plans to redevelop the properties as a parking lot or access road for a new courthouse; a landscaped area; or for retail, residential or mixed-use development.

A local non-profit organization, the Dimond Improvement Association, sought to improve the local community and redevelop the property as a community food hall or marketplace. EPA supports non-profit organizations with projects that maximize existing infrastructure and lead to additional community re-investment.

Cortina Asbestos Monofill Site - Cortina Band of Wintun Indians of California - Targeted Brownfields Assessment Fact Sheet (PDF)(1 pg, 441 K,
September 2015)
EPA Brownfields technical assistance was provided to the tribe to address the concern for contamination of metals and asbestos on this property to aid the redevelopment process for the community. The Cortina tribe is considering various options for redevelopment of the property, including tribal housing or other economic development.
