About EPA's Chief of Staff
Matt Fritz
Matt Fritz is the Chief of Staff at EPA. His responsibilities include serving as a key advisor to Administrator Gina McCarthy, managing the day-to-day operations of the agency and developing strategic initiatives to guide programmatic activities.
Prior to joining EPA in 2013, Matt worked for the state of Connecticut in various capacities for 18 years. For most of his career, Matt worked at the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (now the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection). After starting as an Environmental Analyst, Matt served as the Department’s Director for the Office of Communications and Education. In 2005, Matt was asked to serve as the Chief of Staff to then-Connecticut DEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy. In this capacity, he oversaw the day-to-day operations for the entire agency while implementing programs such as the nationally recognized No Child Left Inside initiative.
In 2008, Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell brought on Matt as her Special Assistant to handle policy matters for the Governor’s office. In that role, Matt oversaw the state’s implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and work on initiatives such as the creation of the Green Chemistry Council. In addition, Governor Rell asked Matt to serve as Connecticut’s representative on the New England Governors Conference’s New England Commission and Land Conservation, where he chaired a group that developed regional strategies to expand and enhance recreational and environmental education opportunities throughout the region.
Matt rejoined Connecticut DEP at the end of Governor Rell’s administration, holding the post of Chief of the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation. In this capacity, he oversaw the operation and maintenance of more than 130 state parks and forests, directed the activities of the state’s boating program, and managed the state’s Conservation Law Enforcement Division.
Matt has a B.A. in History from Eastern Connecticut State University and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Connecticut.
